About the Gallery:
Pinnacles Gallery is a dynamic art space committed to community engagement, artistic development and contemporary practice.

Established in 1996, Pinnacles moved in 2006 to a purpose-built gallery within the Riverway Arts Centre – the only purpose-built gallery building in Townsville.  The space offers a multitude of ways to present artwork and has the capacity to deliver multi-media artwork presentations.

Pinnacles Gallery offers a diverse range of exhibitions, and has played host to a number of significant local, national and international artists. Each exhibition is complemented by a public program of talks and workshops.
The Gallery's mission is to deliver programs that are contemporary, engaging, accessible, interactive and enjoyable. The Pinnacles Gallery shop stocks a collection of international art books and cameras.

Collection Strengths

The City of Townsville Art Collection, numbering over 2000 works, is displayed in subsets and offers a selection of works for loan to corporate clients. The City of Townsville Art Collection policy theme is “the tropics”, focussing on works that relate to the geographical location of north Queensland. The theme encompasses Contemporary Art of Tropical Queensland, Historical Art of Tropical Queensland, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Art, Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea, Popular Art, and Ephemera.

Program Highlights (annual events/festivals):
In keeping with this mission, and responding to demand from the ever growing group of lomographers in Townsville, Pinnacles will launch its inaugural Lomography Competition in 2010, and encourage participants to embrace the 10 rules of Lomography:

1.       Take your LOMO with you wherever you go
2.       Use it all the time, at any time – day or night
3.       Lomography does not interfere with your life, it’s a part of it
4.       Get as close a possible to the objects of your lomographic desire
5.       Don’t think
6.       Be fast
7.       You don’t have to know what’s going to be captured on your film
8.       You don’t have to know what’s on the film afterwards either
9.       Shoot from the hip
10.       Don’t worry about the rules

Pinnacles Gallery also hosts the annual Creative Generations Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design - the premier exhibition of senior school student artwork - as part of a developed program of art education and involvement of local schools. This program also involves a number of workshops, including a school holiday program.
